Day 58: Fri 20 Jul – Port Augusta to Wilpena Pound

3 (0) - 12 (8) deg C

Drive: 162km; Total towed: 6669km

We left Port Augusta just after 9am under very brisk (read "icy") conditions. We didn't have far to go today so knew we could stop every so often for a wander. Our first stop was at Quorn for a wander and then perhaps brew up in the van. However, the temperature was still decidedly nasty so, after a wander we ventured into the Quandong Cafe for a hot brew. They also had some very delectable treats of which we just had to avail ourselves.  Whilst Wendy had a traditional carrot cake, Greg had a cold zucchini slice.  A brisk walk back to the vans to ensure we didn't get too cold.

Next stop was Hawker. We had stopped here a little over two years ago to refuel before getting to Wilpena Pound. Today we not only stopped for a wander, but also had lunch at a local cafe. It was just that kind of weather that enticed one to eat out and eat hot. We both had a chicken and leek pie and they were very nice indeed. Hawker has a fabulous War Memorial area which is along the same line as that at Yungaburra. For a small town, this is an absolute credit.

On the road again to Wilpena Pound Resort and Caravan Park. Wendy had booked two powered sites about a week ago, but when we went to check in they had no record of us having a booking. Which was just as well as when Wendy booked they said they could not get us two sites together. However, when we re-booked at check-in we were able to get two sites side-by-side; go figure. Site #15 for us and #17 for G&Y. Last time we were on #34 which is directly behind us.

After setting up and a cup of tea for Greg, we went for a slow wander around the pound/resort to orientate ourselves. Not long after arriving home, Gunther asked if we were up for early pre-dinner drinks as it would soon be getting very cold. We immediately agreed and joined them at their site 10 minutes later.

It was then down to the serious business of preparing the pizzas for dinner tonight. We ate very early and then watched last night's stage 12 of the TDU on SBS on Demand. Greg then started watching a movie documentary "Hornest's Nest" about the US Forces in Afghanistan.
