Day 61: Mon 23 Jul – Wilpena Pound to Broken Hill

14 – 8 – 18 deg C

Drive: 492km; Total towed: 7161km

We were able to get up a bit earlier as it was definitely warmer, probably due to the cloud cover. We were on the road by 8:30am under somewhat ominous skies. By the time we got to Orroroo, the weather had not improved, in fact the temperature had dropped by 10 deg C. We found a warm coffee shop and had a lovely coffee complete with a yummy vanilla slice.

We were headed for Kingston on Murray, however, before leaving Orroroo we had a look at the weather for the region and places we intended visiting and decided that warmer and drier climes were the best option. We decided to head for Broken Hill knowing that we would probably arrive after dark. Wendy consulted Wikicamps and it said that we could get some water at the dump point which was at the Info Centre. So, we pulled in there, but the only tap was a timed tap to enable you to wash down the dump point. We had contacted G&Y by this stage and it just so happened they were at the same free camp we intended staying at. Gunther very kindly offered us some of his water should we be unable to find some. So, we pulled into the free camp just as G&Y were about to cook their dinner. Gunther was very gracious and helped us put water into our tanks from his blue tank.

A special thank you to the Fischers for not only their company but also for Gunther being “Mr Fixit”. Just like another good friend of ours (Rod Gill), Gunther has just about everything one needs to be able to ‘fix’ things. He also carries water around and we were very fortunate to be able to scab a few litres off him tonight.

After dinner and cleaning up, it was not long before we were in bed after a longer than anticipated drive, not to mention the stress of almost having one’s caravan wheel almost fall off!
