We witnessed a spectacular sunrise at our free-camp this morning. We were on the road just before 9am, just after the kangaroos went to bed for the day (well, we hoped they had) and made good time to Croydon for mornos. We brewed-up in the van again and then went for a tour through the Information Centre and the display out the back which was quite well done - all old stuff! We then took a short walk through the old part of town and then got back on the road. Firstly though, we just had to go and have a look at Lake Belmore. Nothing much to see there so we moved right along!
Next stop was for fuel and lunch at Normanton. Whilst we didn’t really need fuel, it was cheaper here in Normanton than Karumba, so in order to be able to get back to Normanton we refuelled. Lunch was had in the van just out of town, over the river at the Mutton Hole Wetlands. Y&G joined us there and we left together for Karumba.
We had pre-booked two sites at the Gulf Country Van Park and it was chaos right from the moment we stepped into the office. We had to wait for the lady to take two separate phone calls, and then she checked us in. Whilst she was trying very hard to accommodate us on sites close together she was a tad distracted. Anyway, we ended up with two sites that already had occupants. So, a quick walk back to the office where there was more prevaricating until Greg texted Wendy to say sites 31 & 38 were unoccupied so we took those. We are on site #31.
We went to the Sunset Tavern for two purposes - to eat, and to view the sunset which we were told was quite spectacular. So, we searched Google for the sunset time and it told us 6:11pm. So, off we went at 5:45pm for a pre-dinner drink and to watch the sunset. At 6:11pm the sunset was not very good and we thought we had been duped. However, about 20 minutes later, the colours were magnificent; pity the phone camera did not fully capture them.
We had our dinners and drinks and came home feeling really well fed.Croydon public toilets
