Day 50: Thu 12 Jul – Ayers Rock to NT-SA Border Rest Area

2 (-3) – 17 deg C

Drive: 343km; Total towed: 5548km

We were underway on a very chilly morning a little after 9am and our first stop was not long after at the Mt Connor lookout rest area. We made our coffees and went for a wander up the dune on the other side of the road to see what was on the other side – a large salt pan. The white of the salt contrasted nicely with the red sand and blue sky.

We stopped again at Erldunda for fuel which was cheaper than we got at Curtin Springs but still expensive at $2.059. It was time for lunch so we drove a little further to get away from the fumes and all the other caravanners and had a salad made with frozen everything. Last night we turned the gas to the high setting so we didn't have a repeat of the night before. However, it did the opposite and froze everything - yoghurt, cream, olives, lettuce, avo, etc, etc. Anyway, lunch was good.

We made camp for the night at a free camp on the NT-SA border. We were far enough off the road to not hear the highway noise and had a bit of dead wood to make a fire which was really nice and warm. Because we had the fire to keep us warm, we had pre-dinner drinks, dinner and post-dinner drinks beside the fire before hitting the sack about 8:30pm.
