Day 40: Mon 2 Jul – Devils Marbles to Gem Tree

Drive: 407km: Total towed: 4619km

4-26 deg C

We didn't really intend on doing so many km today but decided at the last minute to go to Gem Tree as G&Y had highly recommended it. Our first stop was at Wycliffe Well, the UFO Centre of Australia for fuel.

We had mornos at Barrow Creek where we almost got pot-holed by a bloke who really liked the sound of his own voice. His wife however, had some very handy advice with respect to bookings at Alice Springs, Ayers Rock/Uluru and Kings Canyon. So, Wendy got on the phone and booked Alice and the Rock. We were unable to book a powered site at KC and were told to just turn up and take our chance for the unpowered sites.

We moved on and stopped again Ti Tree for fuel as it was the cheapest around. From there it was non-stop to Gem Tree; we didn't even stop for lunch. By the time we got to Gem Tree it was after 3:30pm so decided to have an early'ish dinner.

Before that however, Wendy logged on to the free Wi-Fi and updated the blog before she was informed she had exceeded the data limit - they don't tell you that when you check in, or even when you log into the site. Gunther was correct when he said that GT was a large dust bowl, but we had powered site #3 and it was possibly the best site as the generator is in a gully, but other sites do get the noise. We heard only a slight purr all night and it was quietly comforting.

The powered sites were all occupied and there were many in the unpowered sites as well but you wouldn't know it. There are a number of things to do at Gem Tree but we only had one night so may be back sometime.
