We left Karumba just after 9am and headed back the way we came - to Normanton. We stopped to refuel the truck first as the diesel was still relatively cheap. After completing that mission, and whilst G&Y went to the hospital to have Yvonne’s foot X-rayed again, we set off for the Railway Station to hopefully see the Gulf Lander but it was not in; it had left the station at 8:30 this very morning. Not to worry, we took a few photos of the station then brewed up in the van and drank it before moving on.
We stopped again at The Four Ways roadhouse for lunch (made our own in the van) and then not again until we arrived at our free-camp for the night - Terry Smith Lookout at Three Rivers. It was not really a lookout but a roadside stop with toilets and a couple of shelters with picnic tables. As we arrived before G&Y, we picked a site we thought would be suitable for both vans. G&Y didn't arrive until just after 4:30pm and found a site more to their liking, then came and had a pre-dinner drink with us. The guy from next door to us also invited himself along - Ian - quite an interesting chap who had obviously not had a lot of company over the last little while and obviously liked the sound of his own voice. Fortunately, he was a bit more interesting than our previous neighbour in Karumba.
It was a relatively long day for only having driven just under 400km. But with a headwind, a not so salubrious road (down to a single track at times) with short road trains and lots of caravaners coming from the other direction, we did have to concentrate so we were both quite tired and were therefore in bed just before 9pm.
