Day 62: Tue 24 Jul – Broken Hill to Cobar

4 (1) - 23 deg C; definitely getting warmer during the day but still chilly at night

Drive: 461km; Total towed: 7622km

After saying goodbye to G&Y for the second time we left at 8am but had to go back into Broken Hill; in our haste to find the free camp before it got too dark after failing in our attempt to find water, we forgot to refuel the truck!

After that task was completed we were on the road heading for Wilcannia. Due to having to put our watches forward 30 minutes, we were a bit late in having mornos but it was very welcome by the time we got to Wilcannia. Just as we were in the middle of our brews, who should arrive - yep, you guessed it - G&Y! So, we stayed a while longer to chat with them and also to fill up the van with water. In retrospect, it probably wasn't a really good idea as we had no idea of the water quality - it was from a tap on the side of an old, dis-used house! Greg did try it before filling up, and said it smelled and tasted OK, but then started having tummy pains not long after. We will just have to boil our drinking water. And then drain the tank on the road tomorrow and find a caravan park to stay in tomorrow night and fill up again.

We did not stop again until we arrived in Cobar, our stop for the night. We refuelled the truck before we made camp this time! We found the free camp behind the Cobar Memorial Services Club and chose our site. Only time will tell if it is any good or not as it is adjacent to a skate park. There were not a whole lot of sites to choose from but we did all right, we think.

After setting up we had a quick lunch of yoghurt and nuts and then hit the streets. There's not much to see in Cobar, and after a very short walk, we did a spot of grocery shopping before settling in for the evening.

There were a LOT of dead kangaroos on the road and side of the road today. It was quite sad to see really. In some places it was like they had been having a party on the road and along came a road train and mowed them all down. There were also a few dead goats and young emu.

The road surface was always good, but the underneath was a little lumpy in some places and downright rotten in others.
