Day 11: Sun 3 Jun – Charters Towers

4 (feels like 2) - 25 deg C, fine and sunny

After the usual morning routine, we rode off on the bikes at 10am to explore more of Charters Towers. As Gunther was not with us yesterday, we took him into the city to see some stuff, most of which he saw when he drove Yvonne around yesterday. We also just had to visit the local CWA markets; most of the products were old books and crocheted garments to keep you warm. Next up was a ride up Tower Hill. Greg and Gunther made it all the way to the top but Wendy had to stop in two places as she ran out of gears and puff. Once up on the hill, the views were excellent as it was such a nice day. Coming back down the hill was a lot easier however, Wendy reckons her bike needs new brake pads!

It was then off to the cemetery in the hope of finding the grave of Greg’s great, great-grandmother who died here in 1901. As we had no idea of where she might be we searched in what we thought to be the right area all to no avail. It was however a nice wander through the cemetery. On the way to the cemetery, Greg and Gunther were admiring a hotel; Wendy yelled out to watch out for the pole that was smack bang in the middle of the cycle path - Greg managed to avoid it and Gunther stopped when his chest hit the pole. He had managed to take a lot of his speed off by locking up his brakes so hard his back wheel came off the ground! Fortunately, he was OK and we were able to continue riding.

Lunch was had on our return, and just as Wendy was gearing up for an LLD, the boys decided they should inspect the bearings on our caravan before it goes to the doctor to get fixed (hopefully). So, no LLD for Wendy, and the job took the better part of the afternoon. We then prepared our dinner as we were off to the drive-in. We watched The Crooked House and half of Breath. The first movie was an adaption of an Agatha Christie novel and was quite good. The second one was an Australian movie and was very slow, so we left. The others stayed until the end. It was a later night than usual.
