2 (feels like -2) - 16 deg C,
blue, sunny skies, windy
Drive: 357km; Total towed: 5110km
Even though it felt like it was -2.3 deg C this morning we both still got up and went for a walk; not an especially long walk, but a walk nonetheless. Breakfast of hot toast and coffee warmed us up. We left not long after 9am.
Just before we left Greg asked the man behind us with a LOTUS van what he thought of them. Well, we would still be there talking to him about how good it is and how good the price was. He seemed to know some things about a few vans and asked us what we would be doing with our van (we had told him we were thinking of upsizing) as he was looking for something for his wife’s parents and thought our van would be perfect. They live in Gatton, not too far away so Wendy gave them her contact details and we beat a hasty retreat.
We had
decided that wherever we could get fuel we would top up. So, the first fuel
after leaving Alice Springs was Stuarts Well and as it was after 10am, we
decided to brew up in the van. We had the brews to go as it was still quite
cool (10 deg C) and the wind was particularly lazy. We didn’t stop again until
it was time for lunch and this was at Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse which is now
abandoned. We knew it was closed but need a place to stop. After lunch we had a
stroll around the place and it was very sad to see it closed down. The place
was another link in the early Overland Telegraph line between Adelaide and Darwin.
Our next stop was at Curtin Springs for two reasons – fuel and to free camp. Fuel was $2.135 but we needed to fill up here to ensure we had enough to get in to Uluru, do some exploring whilst there, and then to get back here to refuel. Mind you, diesel is only 3c more expensive at Uluru. As the free camp looked pretty full, when paying for fuel, Wendy enquired about a powered site but they are fully booked for the next two weeks! Oh well, we will just have to get that gas heater we bought going to keep us warm.
Space was really tight but Greg managed to find a flat spot behind a camper trailer. Whilst he did park a bit close, old mate next door was not impressed and told us that he would be taking our rego details in case we hit his van in the morning when leaving. Wendy has taken a photo of his vehicle rego and some pictures of the sides of both vans so that if any damage is done to either overnight, we have his details.
We had pre-dinner drinks with Y&G who were parked further towards the entrance. As it was starting to get fresher (the sun was just going down), we only stayed for one drink before coming home to cook our dinner. After dinner we read, updated the blog and went for a short wander to view the stars with very little artificial light to spoil the view.
