Day 26: Mon 18 Jun – Port Douglas to Yungaburra

14-26 deg C, fine and mostly sunny

Drive: 140km; Total towed: 2067km

We elected to give Cooktown a miss this trip for four reasons: 1. M&S really wanted to do it as well; 2. there is a fishing competition on and would be full of rowdy fishers; 3. The caravan park was fully booked and the free camp would be full of fishers, and 4. It is after-all, just a fishing town. One day we may get there though.

We left the very hospitable McClelland free camp just before 9am, and our first stop was Mareeba. As we were approaching Mareeba, Wendy suddenly remembered that Sue had told us about Coffee Works and that we really did need to stop there for mornos and just had to have the hot chocolate. This we did and weren’t we sorry for a few hours after?! Greg had the Traditional hot chocolate – Dark, and Wendy had the same but with Milk chocolate. This is a hot chocolate with a difference – we were served with a glass mug and in it was a paddle pop stick with a huge blob of frozen chocolate on the end and a mug of hot milk. You poured the hot milk over the choc and gave it a good stir to melt it into the milk – yummo. Wendy just had to have a lick of the choc half way through the stirring process and it was gooood! She also had a chunk of white choc in her mug. Wendy had a banana and caramel gateaux and Greg had a raspberry and white choc muffin, both of which added to the sugar overload for the day.

It was then into Atherton for supplies prior to finding the address for our next free-camp. As we spent a little longer than expected in Atherton, we decided to have lunch in the park we had parked our rigs. We then set off for our final stop for the day. We got the address correct, but the number on the letter box is in the wrong place. Turns out the place we were supposed to be at was 500m back up the road. No probs, we had enough space to turn around and come back. As we were about to leave the driveway, Dave met us as showed us where to go. Well, what a spot; it beats the last place by a large whisker only because of the varied scenery – mountains and rolling hills, Tinaroo Lake, and cattle. The place is a friend of Dave’s and they are away overseas until Sep, so we are very lucky. We even had power and water.

After setting up and a very short nap, it was time to prepare dinner which we ate beside the fire which was very welcome as it was a tad cooler that we have been used to.

We weren’t long out of bed, mainly because it was so jolly cold!
