Drive: 208km; Total towed: 1705km
14-25 deg C, cloudy & sunny to cloudy and drizzly
Greg and Gunther were up before dawn to see the sun come up as they went for their walk. They walked about 3.7km along the beach so got a good workout. Wendy went for her walk along the esplanade which didn't quite go right along the beach as advertised on the map.
After breakfast we packed up the van and continued north. We left just before 9am and had mornos at Ingham. We picked the most popular cafe in the main street - JK's Deli - and were not disappointed. Greg had a veggie quiche and coffee and Wendy had a vanilla slice and coffee. We had our mornos whilst the others completed their grocery shopping before hitting the road again.
Our final destination was Paronella Park which has been voted Australia's #1 best thing to do, so we "just had to do it". We arrived in the drizzle which was not a good sign. You have to pay to enter the park, and that fee entitles you to all the sights and tours, and one free nights’ camping. The entry fee would get you two nights in powered and watered site in Cairns, and we had to pay extra for the second night. Oh well, we probably won't be back for some time to come, even though the entry fee gives you access to the park for 24 months.
After lunch and an LLD we did a self-guided tour of the Park and saw some ruins that we could only imagine would have looked absolutely stunning in their glory. A number of floods and other environmental factors have assisted in their decay. Entry includes a guided tour which we had planned to do tomorrow however, after the wander we did we may skip that and to the bush walk instead. We do intend to do the guided Lights Tour as all the pictures indicate the ruins look spectacular under lights.
We had
dinner at the Mena Creek Hotel, well Wendy did with the others. Greg was a bit
too full from his rather large morning tea and lunch. He joined us later for a
drink though. A great day was had by all.
